Birth and Baptism

The baby child Louis Marie Lèveil was born on 6th April 1884 at Laille in the Archdiocese of Rennes, France. His father Joseph Lèveil and his mother Julianee Lebine brought him up tenderly as he was the youngest of ten children. As he was so frail and weak, he was hurriedly baptized on the same day of his birth. The child recovered quickly by the mercy of God. He grew up in an edifying Catholic family and a peaceful natural environment. Since his childhood he loved the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

Became a Jesuit

He realized his call to the priesthood through the Parish Priest and was admitted in the Seminary of the Archdiocese of Rennes. Later he was inspired by the talk given by a Jesuit Priest from Toulouse Province about the Madura Mission. Through deep prayer and reflection, he decided to join the Society of Jesus with the vision of becoming a missionary in India. He was admitted as a novice on 6th October 1906. After the completion of the noviciate in Belgium, he returned to his home town for the last time before embarking to India by ship with his companions. He pursued Philosophy and picked up Tamil and English languages at the Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur, Kodaikanal. He was sent to Palayamkottai for regency and thereafter to Kurseong for Theological studies, where he was ordained a Jesuit Priest on 13th January 1920.

Fulfilment of his Vision as a Missionary

Brimming with youthful missionary spirit, he took charge as the Parish Priest of Andavoorani in the Maravanadu in June 1921 and laboured tirelessly, without counting the cost, to usher in the Kingdom of Christ among the vastly poor, illiterate, rural people scattered in more than 70 sub stations. After 22 years of yeoman service as a true missionary in Andavoorani, he assumed responsibility as the Parish Priest of Ramanathapuram in 1943 where he continued to serve all people irrespective of caste or creed with vigorous spirit. He was loved and revered by everyone for his personal concern for the poor and needy. After 13 years in Ramanathapuram, he was sent to Sarugani as spiritual father to priests, the religious and to the lay faithful. Though he was worn out and reduced to the frame of a skeleton, his spirit as a missionary and his love for the poor remained unabated. He was available for anyone who approached him for spiritual favours, especially confession or counselling whether he or she was a priest, religious or lay faithful.

Friend of the Poor

He identified himself with the poor. He was at home with them; participating with them in their joys and sorrows. He accepted cheerfully whatever they gave him to eat or drink. He was a simple missionary, a man of God and a friend indeed of the poor and needy.

When the poor farmers cried in need of rain for their crops, he knelt in the church or in the field with arms outstretched, under scorching heat and brought down heavy rain. He was accustomed to distribute palm leaves (ola) written with the word of God, to get rid of rodents and insects out of their fields, lest they destroy their crops. He was never tired of meeting particularly the poor, the sick or those in distress. He prayed over them; sprinkled holy water; healed and comforted them, assuring God’s protection and peace.

He used to feed the hungry; gave clothes and money to those in dire need. He had supplied nets to poor fisher folk. He appealed to the rich and got them to help build houses for the poor families. He also gave letters of recommendation to students and others for help and support. He loved to visit the ailing aged or the bed-ridden to give them Holy Communion and to administer the last sacrament. The poor loved him and revered him as he was like the Good Shepherd.

His Miraculous Death

Foreseeing his time of approaching death, he requested the permission of the Parish Priest and identified the spot near the Parish Church for his burial. A grave was dug as he requested and it was blessed by him. He breathed his last as he had predicted on 21st March 1973. It was the end of a passionate missionary’s life. The poor realized the departure of a holy friend, who will intercede for them in heaven. His funeral was thronged by several thousand from the four corners of the Maravanadu. Instantaneously he was hailed a Saint by the populace.

Father Leveil is still alive after his death

He is living in the hearts of the people of the Marava land in the diocese of Sivagangai as a Saintly Man of God.  Daily people throng his cemetery and offer prayers to him. Many male and female children are baptized by his name. Not only the Catholics but also Hindus and Muslims revere him as a Holy Man of God. They believe that he is still living with them.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

பிறப்பும் திருமுழுக்கும்:

தந்தை லூயி மரி லெவே பிரான்ஸ் நாடடில் ரென் உயர்மறைமாவட்டத்தில் லால் என்ற சிறிய கிராமத்தில் 1884 ஏப்ரல் 06 அன்று பிறந்தார். இறைநம்பிக்கையும் எளிமையும் கொண்ட பெற்றோர் திரு. ஜோசப் லெவே, திருமதி. ஜூலியானா லெபின் அவர்களின் பத்தாவது முத்தாகப் பிறந்தார். குழந்தை லெவே பிறந்தபொழுது எந்த அசைவுமின்றி இருந்ததால் குழந்தை பிழைப்பானோ என்ற கவலையில் அன்றே திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்க பெற்றோர் ஏற்பாடு செய்தார்கள். பங்குக்குரு திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்த அந்த நேரத்திலேயே குழந்தை லெவே இறைவனின் இரக்கத்தால் பிழைத்துக் கொண்டார்.

இயேசு சபை குருவாக:

சிறுவன்லெவே பள்ளிக் கல்வியை முடித்தபிறகு பங்குக்குரு வழியாக இறையழைத்தலை உணர்ந்து ரென் உயர்மறைமாவட்டக் குருமடத்தில் சேர்ந்தார். டூலுஸ் மாநில இயேசு சபை குரு ஒருவரின் மதுரை மறைபரப்புப் பணித்தளம் பற்றிய உரையினால் தூண்டப்பெற்று 1906 அக்டோபர் 6-ம் நாள் இயேசு சபையில் சேர்ந்தார். பெல்ஜியம் நாட்டில் லிம்பர்க் என்ற இடத்தில் நவதுறவிப் பயிற்;சியை முடித்து 1908-ஆம் ஆண்டு இந்தியாவிற்குப் பயணமானார். கொடைக்கானல், செண்பகனூர் திரு இருதயக் கல்லூரியில் தமிழ், ஆங்கில மொழிகளைக் கற்று, தத்துவ இயலும் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தார். குருத்துவப் பணியிடைப் பயிற்சியை (சுநபநnஉல) பாளையங்கோட்டை, தூய சவேரியார் பள்ளியில் முடித்து இறையியல் கற்க மேற்கு வங்காளத்தில் கர்சியாங், தூய மரியன்னை குருமடத்திற்குச் சென்றார். இறையியலை முடித்து கர்சியாங் குருமடத்திலேயே 1920 ஜனவரி 13-ம் தேதி இயேசு சபைக் குருவாக திருநிலைப்படுத்தப் பட்டார்.

பங்குப்பணியாளராக:

குருத்துவ அருட்பொழிவு பெற்று இளமைத் துடிப்புடனும், மறைபரப்புப் பணியார்வத்துடனும் மறவநாட்டில் ஆண்டாவூரணி பங்குப்பணியாளராக 1921-ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் மாதம் பொறுப்பேற்றார். ஆண்டாவூரணியில் 70 கிளைக்கிராமங்களுக்கும் சென்று 22 ஆண்டுகள் (1921-1943) பணியாற்றினார். 1943-ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் முதல் இரமநாதபுரம், தூய ஜெபமாலை அன்னை ஆலயப் பங்குப் பணியாளராகப் பொறுப்பேற்றார். 13 ஆண்டுகள் (1943-1956) சிறப்பாகப் பணியாற்றிய தந்தை லெவே முதிர்வயதின் காரணமாக சருகணிக்கு ஓய்வு எடுக்க அனுப்பப்பட்டார். சருகணி, திரு இருதய ஆலயங்களின் பங்கில் துறவறத்தாருக்கும், இறைமக்களுக்கும் ஆன்மீக ஆலோசகராக 17 ஆண்டுகள் பணியாற்றினார்.

இறப்பே ஒரு புதுமையாக:

தமது வாழ்வின் இறுதிநேரம் நெருங்கிவிட்டதை உணர்ந்த தந்தை லெவே சருகணி பங்குக்குருவிடம் தான் அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட வேண்டிய கல்லறையை பங்கு ஆலயத்தின் அருகிலேயே தோண்ட வலியுறுத்தினார். அவரது விருப்பப்டியே அவர் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த இடத்தில் கல்லறை தோண்டப்பட்டது. அக்கல்லறையை அவரே மந்திரித்தார். தந்தை லெவே முன்னறிவித்தபடியே 1973 மார்ச் 21-ம் நாள் இறைவனடி சேர்ந்தார். அவரது அடக்க நிகழ்வில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் கலந்து கொண்டு அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினார்கள்.

ஏழைகளின் தோழன்:

தந்தை லெவே பணியாற்றிய பங்குத்தளங்களில் ஏழை எளிய மக்கள்மீது அதிக அன்பு கொண்டிருந்தார். மழையில்லாமல் பயிர்கள் வாடுகின்றன என்று விவசாயிகள் கண்ணீர் விட்டபோது ஆலயங்களிலும், வயல்வெளிகளில் வெயிலிலும் முழந்தாளிட்டு செபித்து மழையைப் பெற்றுத் தந்திருக்கிறார். பயிர்களை எலிகளும், பூச்சிகளும் நாசம் செய்தபோது பனைஓலையில் இறைவார்த்தையை எழுதிக்கொடுத்து, செபித்து விவசாயத்தைப் பாதுகாத்திருக்கிறார். நோயாளிகளுக்காக செபித்து, தீர்த்தம் கொடுத்து, ஆசீர்வதித்துக் குணப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார். பட்டினியோடு வந்த மக்களுக்கு உணவும், உடையும், பணமும் கொடுத்து உதவி செய்திருக்கிறார். மீனவர்கள் வலைகள் வாங்கி மீன்பிடிதொழில் செய்ய உதிவியிருக்கிறார்.

மாணவர்களின் படிப்பிற்கும், இளையோரின் வேலைவாய்ப்பிற்கும் பரிந்துரை கடிதம் கொடுத்தும் பொருளுதவி செய்தும் வாழ்வில் முன்னேறச் செய்திருக்கிறார். முதியவர்கள், நோயாளிகளை அவர்களது இல்லங்களில் சந்தித்து, செபயித்து, நற்கருணை வழங்கி ஆறுதல் தந்திருக்கிறார். வசதிபடைத்தோரிடமும், தனது நண்பர்களிடமும் பண உதவி பெற்று ஏழைகள் வீடுகட்டவும், தொழில் தொடங்கவும், உணவு வாங்கவும் உதவி செய்திருக்கிறார். கிராமம் கிராமமாகச் சென்று சாதாரண மக்கள் கொடுத்த எளிய உணவை உண்டு அவர்களுக்கு ஆன்மீக, சமூகப் பணிகள் செய்து ‘ஏழைகளின் தோழனாக’ விளங்கினார்.

இறந்தும் வாழும் லெவே சாமி:

தந்தை லெவே இறந்த நாள் முதல் இன்று வரை சிவகங்கை மறைமாவட்ட மக்களின் மனங்களில் ஒரு ‘புனிதராக’ வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். சருகணியில் அவரது கல்லறையைத் தினந்தோறும் ஏராளமான மக்கள் சந்தித்து, அவரது பரிந்துரையை நாடி பல நன்மைகளை அவர் வழியாக இறைவனிடமிருந்து பெற்றிருக்கிறார்கள். தந்தையின் ஆசியாலும் பரிந்துரையாலும் ஆண்குழந்தை கிடைக்கப் பெற்றவர்கள் ‘லெவே’ என்ற அவரது குடும்பப் பெயரை தங்களது பிள்ளைகளுக்குச் சூட்டி அவரை ஒரு புனிதராகவேப் போற்றுகின்றார்கள். கிறிஸ்தவர்; மட்டுமல்ல பிறசமயத்தவரும் ‘லெவே சாமி’ தங்களோடு இருக்கிறார் என்று மகிழ்வோடு கூறுகின்றனர்.
